Find out: Do you have an absolute body shape or a combination body shape ?

Updated: Jun 12, 2020

We are born with a body structure based on our bone density and size.

Changing it is not in our hands but what we can do is learn the art of beautifying it through cover and camouflage, repeat and counter, minimize and create illusions.

To begin with,

Measure :

  1. Shoulder width

  2. Waist

  3. Hip width

  4. Bust size

How to read the chart:

  1. The most common body shapes measured horizontally are displayed in the box above in black marker.

  2. Vertical Red line shown is a long ruler /measuring yard stick. Put one end of it at the joint of the shoulder and let it fall down naturally.

  3. Look in the mirror and confirm your body shape as per the shapes posted above.

  4. There is a possibility of you either being an absolute one shape, or a combination of 2 shapes or not in any of the above category.

  5. If you do not fit into a stereo type body shape, check whether your body areas are narrower or wider and adapt accordingly.

  6. Body shape is not permanent. Remember, as you mature, with weight loss, with body building, your body shape tends to change.

Do read more about each shape for a better understanding.

Some pointers to keep in mind:

1. Body shape variations are horizontal and vertical .

The head, torso, midriff and leg length proportions also play an important role in making decisions on enhancing or camouflaging a body part area.

2. Angular styles give out more formal look and curved styles give out more casual/social formal look.

3. "Less is more". Create a focal point. Too many creates conflict and too little creates boredom.

4. Choosing a fabric is very important while shortlisting a style. The best of the style and fit will not work if the fabric taken is the wrong one. Angular shapes in clothes helps

5. Lesser the shapes in an outfit, taller and slimmer you look. More the shapes in an outfit, wider and bigger you look. A short heavy lady will look taller in a single colour dress without any embellishments and pockets or collars where as a thin short lady will look heavier in separates having pockets, collars, fuller sleeves....

6.While choosing colours for your outfit , do take into consideration that lighter colours draw attention where as darker colours tend to recede. It is very important to place colours as per the body area you want to flaunt or hide.

You are your unique self having your unique preference. Experiment with clothes. That is the only sure way of knowing what you like and what looks good on you!
